creating games in the classroom
Gesta Miserorum
Gesta Miserorum ("Deeds of the Ill-Fated") is a competitive 3-6 player board game about Europe in the period of 1050-1150 and how medieval chronicles portray the dynastic struggles and God's intervention in those affairs. Each player plays two pieces, a noble secular ruler (you have a choice of 7, each with a special ability) and their most powerful bishop. Either piece can win or be removed from the game. A typical game takes 25 minutes/player (75 minutes for 3 players).
This first iteration of this game was created in a Research in Medieval Sources course (HIST 406W) in 2013. Since that time, many classes and colleagues have played it and improved it with their feedback.
